California Proposition 65
California's Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition 65) requires businesses to provide warnings about significant exposures to chemicals that are known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
The State of California maintains a list of these chemicals, which includes more than 900 substances. Many of these chemicals occur naturally in the environment, may be present in agricultural products, or can be found in foods, beverages, packaging materials, and consumer goods.
Foods and Beverages
Certain foods and beverages may contain naturally occurring trace amounts of chemicals that are listed under Proposition 65. These substances can be present due to environmental conditions, agricultural practices, processing methods, or packaging materials. The presence of a Proposition 65-listed chemical does not necessarily mean that a product is unsafe or violates any food safety standards.
